Thoughts on Why We Get Readings

Lots of mornings when I get up, I ask Alexa what the weather will be. I like to know if I should wear a sweater, a T-shirt, or a rain jacket. Alexa taps into the local weather report and gives me the scoop. Imagine if you could also ask Alexa what kind of day you’re going to have!  Well, Alexa hasn’t quite figured that one out yet, but those of us who use tools of divination can ask that question and we believe that the Universe will respond.

People get readings for many things, but most questions fall in one of a few categories that I consider to be the ‘big three’ of divination’ - Love, Health, or Money. They have questions about whether or not they will find true love or whether they are in the right job or what kind of news they’ll get at the doctor’s office. They want to know if they are on the right path, presumably a path that leads to health, wealth, and well-being.

We all want answers to these kinds of questions so that we can feel like we are in better control of our lives. Tarot can give us information about these things, but there’s a twist. Tarot doesn’t predict the future because the future is not static. It shows us our field of potentiality, what is most likely to happen if we don’t make any changes and if all current conditions remain the same. If the reading reveals possible problems, we can then come up with ideas to shift to a more desirable outcome. Tarot can help with that as well.

I’ve had people come and sit at my table and say, “Tell me my fortune” and then sit expectantly waiting for me to tell them their future as if they had no say in the outcome. I tell them that their fortune is up to them, but together we can use tarot to help them find ways to leverage their current life situation into better outcomes. So ultimately, we’re not asking tarot what kind of day we’re going to have, but what tools can we use to create a better day. Tarot readings are really, really good for that no matter what kind of day you’re having. By the way, AI notwithstanding, if you ask Alexa what kind of day you’re going to have, the reply is likely to be something like “I couldn’t find that on your calendar” – or a weather report!
