Teaching Tarot to Kids

“The Gummy Bear Tarot Deck”

Can children read tarot?  And if they can, should they?  I may be opening up a can of worms here, so I’ll start out by telling you what I believe.  Yes, I think that children absolutely can and should read tarot if they are interested.  That said, I would caution that they should be given age-appropriate tarot decks.  The nudity of the lovers, for example, has a place in classic tarot decks and conveys sophisticated messages on multiple levels, but it’s not needed in a kid’s tarot.

The “Tarot for Kids” Tarot Deck by Theresa Reed

I’m showing pictures here of some cards from several decks that I would recommend.  First and foremost, Tarot for Kids by Theresa Reed and published by Sounds True was just published last year and it’s a great deck no matter what your age. The Halloween Tarot by Kipling West and The Gummy Bear Tarot by Dietmar Bittrich are both published by U.S. Games and the images are definitely kid-friendly.  All of these are easily available on Amazon.  The point of any good oracle is that the images are something that the reader can relate to, and that’s certainly the case with these decks for kids.

The other belief I have about this topic is that I think that everyone has a sixth sense.  Our modern world is very focused on materialism and gives little credibility to the subtle energies of intuition. But the better everyone is at using this gift, the better we can all connect and the better world we can create!  Therefore, if kids learn to do this earlier, they will have mastered this skill by the time it’s their turn to run things in the world.

If you’re local here in Palm Beach county and your kids are looking for something different to do, sign them up for our ‘Tarot for Kids” class at MINDFUL MOMENTS (10397 Southern Blvd., RPB, FL, 33411) this Thursday, July 21 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  Call the store at 561-429-3768 or text 561-716-7279 to schedule. We will be using the “Tarot for Kids” deck.

I’ll be there to teach tarot in a way that kids will easily understand, and Marci Tennenhouse will be teaching mindful movements based on yoga practice that will flow from the work with the cards.  It’s going to be a super fun morning!
