Creating Affirmations with Tarot
THE PAGE OF WANDS AND THE QUEEN OF SWORDS - FANTASTIC MENAGERIE TAROT DECK
There’s an entire industry devoted to creating card decks full of positive messages which can in turn align our thoughts to positivity and thus improve our lives. (Thank you, Louise L. Hay!) I own more than one such deck. I used to keep them on my desk back in the days when I had a muggle job. They really helped me get through tough days. Lots of people would stop by just to pull a card. We all need inspiration!
I also like creating affirmations with tarot cards. As opposed to simply drawing a card to read a message such as “Abundance flows to me” there are two steps involved here. First, we pull a tarot card and interpret it, then we must create an affirmation that can either match the energy of that card or improve the situation it predicts. Thus, a random drawing of the Three of Swords could inspire an affirmation like “I deal with everyday challenges with ease”. If the card is already more positive, such as the Three of Cups, we can write an affirmation like “I celebrate my family and friends every day”.
What I like about using a tarot card to inspire me and writing the affirmation myself is that I feel that it’s more deeply inscribed into my psyche than simply reading a card with a pre-written affirmation. It’s a scientifically proven fact that writing something down helps us commit it to memory better than just hearing it, or in this case reading it.
You can do this by randomly pulling a card (“What does the Universe want me to know today?”) or you can choose a card intentionally by having a situation in mind that you need to improve and go through the deck with the cards face up to select the card that best embodies a good solution.
Here are my examples. (See the picture above featuring the two cards I drew from my beloved Fantastic Menagerie by Baba Studios.) For my random card I drew the Page of Wands. An affirmation I could write would be “I am constantly inspired by life”, which is true for me, although some days that’s easier than others. The card I selected intentionally is the Queen of Swords, as I am ever procrastinating writing that book! So, I can write the affirmation, “I write my book with inspired ease.” See how easy it is? What card is inspiring you today?
